Suman Kumar Das and Shibasish Sahoo scored a defiant half-century each in the second innings to help Odisha draw their Vijay Merchant Trophy East Zone U-16 league match against Bengal on the third and last day at Eden Gardens, Kolkata today. But host Bengal gained three points by virtue of taking a first-innings lead of 188 runs, while Odisha settled with one points.
Put into bat by Odisha captain Nitish Niranjan Samantray, host Bengal compiled a first-innings total of 312. In reply, Odisha folded up for 124. Ayush Pandey was the top scorer for Bengal with a 149-ball 76. Shibasish Sahoo was most successful bowler for Odisha, bagging five wickets for 45 runs. Wicket-keeper Manas Ranjan Nayak was another outstanding performer for Odisha, taking six catches behind the stumps.
Odisha started their first-innings on a disappointing note, losing three wickets for 21 runs. They could not overcome that crisis despite a 65-run stand for the fourth wicket between Abinash Singh and Saswat Mohanty. Abinash became top scorer with 43, while Saswat contributed 28. Manas Ranjan Nayak also shone with the bat, making an useful 23. Prayas Ray Burman was most successful Bengal bowler, taking four wickets for 28 runs.
Following on after conceding huge first-innings lead, Odisha were in dire strait, getting reduced to 97 for seven. But Suman and Shibasish dashed the victory hope for the home team with belligerent partnership of 96 runs for the eighth wicket. Suman hit 152-ball 56 with the help of eight boundaries and Shibasish cracked 51, which came off 161 deliveries and included nine hits to the rope.
Odisha were 213 for nine and leading by 25 runs when the match came to an end. Besides Suman and Shibasish, wicket-keeper Manas Ranjan Nayak shone with the bat, contributing 40 runs as an opener. Odisha will next play Jharkhand in home venue from December 7 to 9.
